Erisin ES777A review with tips and advice

I've had some questions about the Erisin ES777A and thought I'd write an actual review about it. Since my last posts have mostly been just a walkthrough and a listing of the programs I use on it, the thing that's missing here is a review with my opinions and tips for potential buyers. So here goes:

The Erisin ES777A is in essence a double-din sized car stereo with a detachable face plate. What makes it interesting and different from the pleothra of competitors on the market (several models even from Erisin themselves) is the fact that the unit also runs Android. As far as I know it's the only one on sale today anywhere to do this. There is the Parrot Asteroid, but it hardly qualifies since you are very restricted on the programs you can use on it.

A bit of history and background first. I'd been looking for a head unit for my car (actually way before I even bought the current car) that could do anything - basically along the lines of the projects featured on mp3car.com. What I didn't want was a whole mess of different pieces and computer parts and a slow desktop OS in my car. Windows CE was one option, since all of the other cheap 1 or 2 din head units from China use it. However the Windows CE is not a very user friendly starting point since most of the software on it are either OEM/proprietary style or old/clunky and ugly. Android is what I use on my phone and what I knew I wanted. No devices were on the market and I continued my searches from time to time. Then out of the blue sometime last Autumn I saw something on the Internet called the Erisin ES666 and I was instantly hooked. Exactly what I'd been looking for - a 2din head unit with a detachable Android tablet! My enthusiasm was short lived as I read user reviews and saw a couple of Youtube videos of the device. It was painfully slow and clunky and used the already very outdated Android 2.1. I considered buying it anyways but thought I'd better not since it already looked like I'd be dissapointed.
Then in December I saw that they had released a new version with an upgraded tablet and my hopes went up again. I read everything I could find about the unit and it all seemed very exiting - a new 1Ghz Telechips chipset, double the memory and Android 2.3! No reviews were to be found at the time, but I decided to take a leap of faith this time and ordered it.

Now for the actual review.
I talked about the aesthetic aspects already on my unboxing post but I'll go into a bit more detail here.
The unit itself really IS way more professional looking than most cheap Chinese head units or Android tablets. There are a few issues though. The tablet part suffers from the same problems that the other cheap ones do - mainly that the screen is too close to the other inner bits which causes the screen to touch the other bits when tapped, which then causes ghosting. You'll know what I mean if you've ever pushed your finger against an LCD screen that is NOT a touch screen. This isn't a very big issue and it mostly affects the upper left corner of the screen (when held horizontally). The other obvious thing is that the touch screen is resistive rather than the more modern capacitive that all newer mobile phones use. This is an issue to consider if you're going to be using the tablet as an actual tablet computer at home. In the car it doesn't affect the use much at all in my view.

The tablet is fast. Very fast. Faster in operation than my HTC Desire S mobile phone. The startup is quick and the navigation program (which is the heaviest one of all of my apps) starts in a couple of seconds. So the speed issues of the ES666 are well and gone.
You do need to do some tinkering however if you want it to run smoothly in your car as the Android 2.3 operating system is not designed originally for tablets. This means you'll have things like a dialler program, contact list and all the other things normally found on a phone. Essentially they've just put the vanilla Android 2.3 phone OS on the tablet and not done anything about it. Luckily the Android community is buzzing with talented people who make fixes for these kind of problems. My post about the software I use is a good place to start with this tab. You'll be fine after deleting the unneccessary apps, installing some others, and tweaking a lot of settings. To put it bluntly - you're not going to have a good time with the tablet straight out of the box.

There are Wifi and all of the acceleration sensors in the tablet, and it connects to the GPS system in the head unit. However, there is NO bluetooth in the tab, only on the head unit. This will be an issue if you are planning on using an OBD2-plug with your car as the tab is perfectly suitable for running Torque or Adyno. Luckily there are a couple of options: you could use a Wifi-OBD2-plug or you could jury-rig a bluetooth module inside the tab - as I'm intending to do.

The tab has a big 3000mAh battery and it'll take a few hours worth of use outside of the car. You also get a wall charger for it.

On to the head unit. The construction is good, I'd say it's on par with any Japanese or European manufacturer. All of the plastic bits on the front feel good and the buttons click nicely and sound satisfying when pushed. There are an excellent selection of connections, such as line outs for all 4 channels plus the sub, rear camera input, standard ISO connections for all the normal stuff like power and speakers AND they even supply a cable for you iPod and the device can do iPod controls right on the screen. There are also cables for steering wheel controls and instructions on how to wire them up. Great stuff.

Some bad things as well. The buttons on the head unit are strangely chosen. If you don't have the tablet connected and are only using the hardware buttons you have VERY limited controls to some things and absurdly complex controls for others. For example: there are only play/pause, next and previous-buttons to control the songs. You can have a 16gig sd card or an usb stick connected with thousands of songs and there's no way to change the folder. What a drag. You'll have to click next a thousand times to get to a song you want to hear. The worst part is that the previous button doesn't go back more than to the first song on the folder you are currently in. So if you went over - good luck, you'll have to scroll forwards a thousand times again. This is my biggest gripe with the head unit itself.
When the pad is connected you obviously have more control. Still, it's not one of the best ones I've seen. You're going to see the first 8 characters of the folder and song titles and you'll have to touch the screen each time to get the control buttons to show up (they overlay over the bottom part of the screen and go away if you don't touch anything for a couple of seconds). Even with those the folder navigation is way too much of a hassle. First you touch the screen to get the controls, then you press the button to get a new screen of controls as the navigation buttons are on the second screen, then you navigate to the right folder and only then press enter. It's a mess.

I should explain that the problems arise from the fact that the head unit runs Windows CE and is totally separate from the Android tab. The screen is shared and you have a hardware button to switch between the Android OS and the head unit's one. All of my complaints about the user intefrace are about the head unit's proprietary music player that as far as I know cannot be altered or replaced. If you use the Android for music playing it'll be just as good or bad as the app you'll use for it.
The radio is actually quite good, reception is better than average (I used to have a late model Blaupunkt and the reception on this is noticably better) and the on screen controls are good. There are 6 hardware buttons for channels when the screen is detached so no problems there either.

The iPod connectivity works fine, as soon as you plug the cable to your iPod you get controls on the screen of the head unit that give you access to your playlists, artists, albums and such. Pretty basic but works without a hitch. There is also the bluetooth functionality I mentioned earlier. You have both hands free calling and streaming audio over the bluetooth. Both work fine and the telephone controls are large and clear to use. I only wish that the guy who did the radio and bluetooth apps on the head unit would have designed the controls for the music player app as well.

You have the option of choosing from 9 different car manufacturer logos for when the head unit is loading a disc or starting up. Unfortunately you HAVE TO select one of them and as you might suspect when there are only 9 - chances are that yours isn't among them. So maybe you'll end up with a Saab that has a Chevrolet logo or a Porsche with a Volkswagen logo like me. A small issue I know, but annoying all the same.

There are basic equalizer functions and some other settings such as button sounds and rear view camera mirroring in the setup screen. Mostly pretty basic stuff and nothing too special.
Sound quality is excellent and the built-in amplifier is among the best and most powerful I've found in any head units. Like I previously said, I used to have a Blaupunkt unit that I replaced with this and the sound quality is easily on par with that.

Other noticable things: there is no installation bracket in the box but they do supply all the cables (even the iPod one!), a remote and a nice leather holder for the tablet.

In conclusion I'd say this is an excellent product with some problems you'll need to keep in mind when buying. The fact that it has the Android tab makes it a must-buy for many since you can use all of the g-force and GPS performance software AND any navigation app you want straight on you car head unit. If you're willing to do some app installation and configuration on the pad and can overlook some of the usability issues I think it's impossible to get anything even approaching this unit at the same cost.

and this is where I bought mine from: http://www.erisin.com/erisin-es777a-3g-wifi-tablet-midi-pad-hd-car-dvd-player_p253.html

UPDATE: I can do a video version of the review and/or talk about a specific aspect or use case if there is interest. Comment on the post or send me a message if you'd like to have that.

  1. Hello! Tell me how is realized the possibility of using the Internet by 3G technology. I did not see a slot for SIM card...

    1. There is no internal 3G, but drivers for USB dongles are available. So you could either use a USB 3G dongle or you could use your mobile phone as a 3G Wifi hotspot and connect the tab to it with Wifi. That's what I do.

    2. Can you tether the android phone via USB for wifi?

      Delete
    3. Do you mean for 3G? The pad has wifi in it so there would be no reason to tether it to anything else for wifi use. If you meant 3G then it depends on your phone - if your phone has USB tethering capabilities then it will work with the pad too.

    4. Thanks for the fast response. Yes I meant 3G. I might be sold. I was curious if you can use the head unit and listen to the navigation from the tab at the same time? It doesn't sound like it, it sounds like you can only use the navigation while using the tab. Or will it let you know when you have a phone call via bluetooth if you are using the tab? Thank you for all this information. This device sounds great in theory, it just sounds like it's 2 non-cohesive devices trying to work together at the same time and failing. I still want it though. Thanks again

    5. You can use the head unit and navigation at the same time. The sound of the navigation voice will interrupt the head unit music when you get instructions and then return after that. It's not seamless, there's a small pause of around a second before the music returns, but it's not that much worse than many OEM systems.
Same thing with the bluetooth. Whatever else you are doing, listening to radio, using the pad etc. it will interrupt it and switch to the bluetooth source for the call. When you hang up it will return to the original source.

    6. Thanks, I think I'm sold. I'm interested in you "jury-rigging a bluetooth module inside the tab" Is there some card or kit for this or are you going to try to splice a dongle in there somewhere? Thanks.

    7. Exactly as you thought. I'm thinking of connecting a small bt dongle inside the unit by soldering the connetions to one of the USB ports. There is quite a lot of empty space inside the pad's housing so it shouldn't be a problem. Only thing is whether or not there are connectors for the USB somewhere far enough from anything else for me to solder them with my 5€ soldering iron :D
Which is to say it's not the most sophisticated thing in the world and will solder off anyting close to it...

    8. I ordered it. I ordered it off ebay so I could purchase a 3 year squaretrade warranty with it. I might have been able to anyway without ebay, but I'm not sure. I also ordered a BT dongle and a mini USB to USB cable. I've been reading a lot of threads and I'm not sure if using BT will even be possible with an android tablet that doesn't come with it already installed. I haven't heard of any successful cases. However, if the dongle works I think I'll splice it in. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for all of your help.

  2. Hi Timo,

I'm gonna buy ES777A within several days so your blog is very helpful for making my decision. I have left some unanswered questions and I hope you know the answers because the contact person at Erisin has no idea.
    1. Can I use SD card larger than 16GB capacity in main unit and/or pad?
    2. Can I play divx movie from sd card of the main unit(WinCE) while other movie is played from the SD card of the PAD(android)?
    3. What hardware can be found in the main unit(processor, memory)? I need to know that for calculating the maximum divx resolution can be played with the main unit(wince).
    4. You mentioned that the sound quality is excellent. You compared the quality with your previous Blaupunkt device. Can you tell me the exact model number of the blaupunkt device?
    5. Please do the following test: switch on the device, set the volume level in middle range, pause the music(not use MUTE) and tell me how much noise do you hear?

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi, here are the answers I can give right away, I'll do the test later and get back with that.
      1. I don't know, I have only tested with a 16Gb card and it works fine. USB does work with an external 300Gb hard drive so I would imagine there should be no problems with a large SD card either. 16Gb SD also works on the PAD, haven't tried larger there either since I only have a 16Gb one.
      2. The both units are totally separate from each other so it doesn't matter what the other is doing. So yes, you can have both units playing a video file but of course the sound will only come from the source you have selected.
      3. No idea about the hardware in the main unit. Sorry. One user from the Androidtablet forums has disassembled his earlier ES666 unit, which I believe has the same main unit as the ES777 which just has the updated Pad part. Maybe his dissassembly photos can help you: https://plus.google.com/photos/106118870910302462662/albums/5699827456679172817
      4. I had a Blaupunkt Alicante mp36
      5. I'll have a go. What I can tell you right away is that the noise from the Pad is bigger than the noise from the main unit. What I mean by this is that with the volume up and the Pad selected as the source with no audio playing you can hear at least some noise. With the main unit's sources I have not noticed any with the car running, but I'll do your test and report.

    2. Hi Timo,

I appreciate your feedback, your answers are very helpful. The only thing left I'm still worried about is the sound quality. I already have a chinese made 2DIN multimedia device in my car(CUSP 7206D). I'm satisfied with everything except sound quality. No bass, no treble just middle frequencies even if the loudness is switched on and the noise makes me crazy. This quality is enough for watching movies but not for listening music. So anything you can tell me more about the sound quality are very welcomed.

      Thank you,
      Csaba.

    3. I tested the noise this morning. I set the volume up to a very high setting (a bit too high for normal listening) and paused the music. There was no audible noise to be heard and the car was turned off at the time. Like I mentioned earlier, in my opinion the sound quality is very good. I've had about 15 cars in the last 15 years and I've installed maybe around 10 sound systems to them. Some with amplifiers and quality speakers and some with just the head unit. I think this is at least on par with the normal japanese/european manufacturers - Pioneer, Sony, Blaupunkt etc with the sound quality and there are no issues with the bass or treble. Hope this helps.

    4. Hi Timo,

Thank you very much for all your help! I'm not worried about sound any more:)
One more thing you can help me with is the price. The sales women at Erisin told me that the minimum price is 395USD including shipping but to be honest it sounds too much. I don't wanna be cheated. What do you think is this price acceptable?

      Delete
    5. That sounds about right to me. It was around 300Eur shipped to Europe and that's 405USD according to today's exchange rate (forex.com).

  4. Hi, Have a question, if I use the tablet as the mp3 player when docked using an android app, if i turn of the car and come back later turn the car on will the app and the music automatically start from where it stopped when i turn the car off? Thanx

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you leave the tablet connected when you shut down the car, the tablet will also shut down. So to answer your question - no, it will not continue automatically if you are using the tablet mp3 player.
The main unit player will continue from where you left it.

    2. From my understanding the main player only takes up to 8gb sdcard? and the random play button is on the remote? does it random play everything or just random within a folder? does it continue random play when you restart? sorry to ask all the questions, have a similar type player that only random plays within a folder and if you turn off the car you need to go back into the menu to resume random play which is a little annoying as I like just having a card full of mp3 just playing at random. Cheers Alex in Australia!

    3. The main unit takes at least a 16GB SD card, maybe bigger. I only have a 16GB one so I haven't been able to test with a larger. The USB port anyways takes a lot bigger sizes, I have tested with a 300GB HDD and it worked fine.
I havent tried the random since it's not something I normally use, but I'll give it a go and report back.

  5. Nice thread! I have a question about the GPS. If there is no WIFI or 3G available, will any GPS work? I have also used the "hotspot" option in my car for laptop use, but the reliability is about 70/30 at best -

Also. Does the TV work very good in your area -- Im in the US, and I believer our broadcasting systems differ.

Again - Thanks for your time!

    1. The GPS works independently from an internet connection. The navigation software supplied with the unit has worldwide maps included on the SD card so there's no 3G or WIFI connection needed. Of course depending on which GPS software you want to use - like Google Maps - you might need to have a USB 3G dongle or WIFI hotspot from your mobile phone available to use it. The GPS has a nice feature in that it is connected to the power from the main unit and gets the signal immediately when the main unit is turned on. This means that when you start a GPS application on the Android pad, it has the signal immediately, not after a few seconds like on a mobile phone.
TV does not work in my area since Finland has digital DVB-T and DVB-C only, and this unit only has an analog TV tuner. I believe the new version (ES888A) is the same as this but with digital TV tuner.

  6. Wow -- Thanks for the quick response.

I think Im going to order this today. Hmm..I wonder if there is a way to "teather" your phone to this unit to access wifi.

Do you know of a fit guide for this? Im looking to install in my 2010 Jeep Wrangler (and yes, Im a novice)

Again -- Thanks for your assistance.

    1. You can tether your mobile phone easily if you have an Android phone - there is the WIFI hot spot app that connects to the internet via its 3G connection and then shares it over the WIFI. Iphone & others have the same feature somewhere I would assume.

Don't know of a fit guide, do you mean instructions or a kit to install it with? It's a standard 2din so basically anything supporting that should be fine.

  7. Good to know about the teathering.

Yes.. i have basic 2 din system now, so it should install nice.

I just placed my order for the ess777a and within minutes, I wish i had ordered the es778 model. I have an email into them, and will see if they will update my order. I ordered from the site you listed above. How long was delivery time for you?

    ReplyDelete
  8. The tethering option that you speak of requires a costly ad on to my already over priced phone service -- I was looking for a "free" way to connect. Since I already ordered the system, I will do some additional research to find out- -- Im looking for something kinda like the following --

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4TbDFHHFFE

How long did your delivery take?

Again -- thanks for allowing me to blow up your blog...lol

    1. I see. Keep in mind however that the pad has no bluetooth so the kind of tethering shown on that video will not work. You'll have to use something to create a WIFI hot spot on your phone and connect to that. Or else get a 3G dongle and use it directly with the pad.

My delivery only took a few days, less than a week definetely. Since you are in the US I would imagine it's going to take at leas a little longer because you will have to deal with customs and that sort of thing.

  9. Hi there,

Any luck on getting the obd 2 plug working?
I'm really curious to hear if it is possible to get a Bluetooth dongle working in the pad or to somehow get the Bluetooth function from the main unit working in Android when docked.

Let us know what you can find on this!

    1. To tell you the truth, I haven't even tried the OBD2 plug yet. I've been busy and other excuses... and my car doesn't have normal OBD2 connectivity so I'll need to use a Porsche diagnostics plug converter with the OBD2 dongle. I'll get around to it though, I'm going to first try the connection with my Android phone and if it works, I'll probably buy a Wifi OBD2 plug and just use that with the Erisin pad.
This will have to wait a while though, since I'll be doing the chip installation and work with the weight reduction at the same time. When the weather warms up a bit and I'll start getting ready for the track days!

  10. Hi, GREAT GREAT thread. Thanks for sharing....
I'm thinking of getting one of these little things, since (as you mentioned somewhere as well) installing a carPC is a kind of big mess.
My Toyota Auris has a handsfree bluetooth adaptor that even though has no buttons (just voice commands) has a great microphone installed on the sky of the car. I never had any issues with echos and stuff. How do you rate this capabilities of the Erisin?

    1. I've had mixed responses from the other side of the coversation when using the bt on the unit. Most of the time it's been positive so I'm thinking it's fine. I actually don't use it much so my experiences come from around 10 calls, from which maybe 1 was with bad reception. Of course that might have been with the other side so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Streaming audio (music) from a phone with bt has no problems either.

Maybe you should try disabling some system services from the boot to speed things up.

  12. Hi from Germany,

I bought my device about a month ago but I was not able to install it until last weekend. I have an old Ford Windstar, so the installation was easy without any electronical issues.

I agree: the sound quality is very very good, even on the 13 years old original speakers. While you can adjust the usual settings in radio-mode like Volume, Bass, Treble, Balance and Fader there is additional audio-setting in the DVD/USB/SD-Mode where one can switch on/off Loudness, DBAS, MBP(?) and EQ.

Sometimes my screen blanks white, too. To me it seems like an issue with the starting order, because it happened when the head-unit was still in starting mode (clock is visible) but not yet in radio-mode when I inserted the PAD.

You described the possibility of soldering a blue tooth dongle to an internal USB-Port. I do not want to open the pad, so I tried to connect my bluetooth-dongle to the PAD using the USB A Female to USB Mini Adapter which came with the device. Unfortunately without success. Still no BT-Settings available. Is there anything more to think of?

BTW: While I wasn't able to use the PAD in the car, the PAD worked nice as an Internet-Radio extension to my HiFi at home. Too nice, because now my wife is complaining when I take the PAD with me ;)

    1. I think the bt problems come from the fact that there are no built in bt drivers in the android build that's on the device. You will most likely need to try and install them somehow, which is not made too easy on the android... I haven't looked into this myseld yet, since I'm going to install my bt ODB2 plug only later in the spring and test it out then.

HI There, just got a es778, and just bench testing for now, one issue I have found is if I reset the unit, start in up, when booted I select navigation and the gps icon show on the top of the pad indicating gps is active. However if I turn it off then on again wait till is't booted, select the navigation gps icon will not come back on and I have no gps signal. Can only get gps signal if i reset the unit at the front next to mic, and only have gps for the first time I have turned it on. Have you have this issue?? interested to know thanx.

    2. Ok, might b just mine. Found your forum you got goin here so though I'd ask. Might Reset the tab and start again, see what happens.

What do ya think of the remote control? about as useless as a helicopter with ejector seats!!

Tablet screen is not a bright as I'd hoped, seems a little on the dull side, and also if ya crank the volume up there is a bit of background noise when using the Tablet. However if ya keep the volume on the tab set on the highest and just use the volume on the main unit keeps the noise ratio down as low as possible and not really noticable.

Gr8 forum u got goin here, good work!

      Cheers, Big Al

    3. So I have discovered, the only way to activate the gps signal is to remove the tab, just turn the main unit off and on, the clip the tab in and the gps signal is there, even if I have already started a gps app or navigation.

Does your gps signal work all the time, cuz I emailed erisin and they told me this is normal!

"You have to start the main unit before you put the Pad in the unit, Then the model can work"

Is their exact words, just seems like a quick fix answer so they don't have to deal with and problems!!

    4. Mine does work all the time, but I do turn off the pad each time I shut down the car. What I mean is that I let the pad stay connected to the main unit when I turn the car off. Then the pad shuts itself down properly. When I start the car next time the pad turns on automatically (if I take the pad with me when I leave the car, I start the car so the head unit turns on before connecting the pad again) and the GPS has worked each time with no problems.
I don't know if there would be any problems with the pad turned on when connecting it to the main unit.

      Delete
    5. ok, my problem is, if I turn the car off the pad will turn off automatically and will restart when I turn the car on, however then the gps signal will not work, unless i pop the pad out and just turn off and restart the main unit and pop it back in!

Sounds like you do not have this issue and it just doesn't seem right that this should happen, so i'd better annoy erisin a little more.

Seems like a little bug in the system that needs sorting.

    6. These kinds of "personality" issues usually come with all of the no-brand Chinese devices, you might get a fully working unit or a lemon...
Maybe the easiest way would be to ask for a replacement unit as I'm pretty sure yours doesn't work how it's supposed to.

    7. Be interested to know how everybody else get along with their 777 or 778, but I decided to pull mine out, too many buggy little issues I reckon. The idea of these systems is great, however they really need to take the time to finish them off properly, iron out all the bugs.

Would I buy another, mmmmm, probably not.

However it might be suitable to set up in my Caravan when on holidays.

Thanx for the forum, providing lots of good info for people interested in these units.

      Cheers Big Al.

  14. UPDATE: I can do a video version of the review and/or talk about a specific aspect or use case if there is interest. Comment on the post or send me a message if you'd like to have that.

    I would love that!

Just go through each function and any quirks of the system you have found.

  15. I would like the video review aswell.

Can you talk about things like how viewable it is in full sunlight.
Is it very flexible in the settings, such as can you use the steering wheel controls in any media player you decide to use on the tab or only the original media player.
Does music continue to play when it goes to reverse camera? Does it still go to reverse camera if you are running in pad mode?

    1. The screen is not brilliant in direct sunlight. In my car the dashboard gives some shade to it so it's viewable even in sunlight. However I have seen better ones (and also worse ones). I cannot comment on the steering wheel controls or reverse camera since I have not installed those.

  16. What about a USB OBDII adapter, would that work? Torque app allows you to select BT, WiFi or USB adapters. And they are a damn site cheaper than wifi ones.

    1. I would imagine that it works. Have not tried any OBD adpaters yet though.

  17. Hello --
I just had my unit professionally installed today -- and I must say that Im quite disappointed in my overall purchase and expectations of this. There are a number of different issues and all of the vary from installation problems, to the es777a unit itself, and lack of quality --

Let me just list my issues that Im having, and in a day or two, I will follow up with results after I return to have some of the install issues fixed.

    1) No radio reception - either the antenna has fallen off, or the adapter itself is bad.
    2) This thing is a mess when turning on and off -- It is never consistant. When turning the key off, sometimes the entire unit will shut down, other times the tablet remains on?? And when turning ignition on -- same result, sometimes the unit will start up, and other times you have to play with the power button and the menu button to get it to turn on.

    3) GPS is not working -- Unsure where the installer located antenna??

    4) while cd music is playing, and you want to use the tablet... every "touch" action on the pad will result in an interuption of the music playing.

    5) Streaming bluetooth music? very anoying background noise - music quality itself is good, but in between songs and low volume has a lot of noise. The cd quality is excellent, as well as some of the hd streamimng internet stations.

    6) While the cd is playing, the wallpaper choices are very very poor quality images that cheapen this unit.

    7) The touch pad is klunky as well.. had to navugate screens in many cases.

There are some highlights of this unit that have me wanting to resolve the bad and consider keeping it (after all, Im getting in deep financially with it) and they are the cd/dvd quality, and the overall potential. The operating system (when not freezing up) tends to move quite well between applications. I do have the other inputs and back-up camera ready to hook up as well. I hope to resolve the many bad issues, and I will report back later to update such findings and changes

  19. Buy at your own risk -- I knew this when I purchased this item, but I took the risk and now am now dealing with the consequences. If you are looking for something to tinker with and dont mind a "prototype" quality unit, then maybe this is for you. I spent a lot of money with the purchase, shipping, install kit, wiring kit, and professional install and the end result is less than half the unit of my stock radio. The gadgets and options and abilites drew me in. The home charging system does not work, the radio reception is very poor (could be an installation issue) while the dvd is playing -- it requires volume to be turned all the way up, and still not very loud. My tablet is not working and Erisen said I can send it back at MY expense. The other big issue is the powering on and off of this unit. I can drive about three miles down the road BEFORE I can get this thing to power up -- very very glitchy. Thanks for all the good forum information, but like I said -- BEWARE!

    1. Wow, sounds like you got a really bum deal! I do agree with you on fact that it really is not a unit for "normal" consumer and I tried to point that out on my blog posts. You need to be into tinkering and doing custom work to really enjoy the unit. That said, your issues with the charger not working, bad radio reception and the very slow boot up are things that I have not come across on mine. So it would seem you have a faulty unit.

  20. Great comments and insight! Your blog is better than all of the forums I have found on this unit. Maybe we could start a forum? LOL

    Questions:
What is the difference between the 777 and 778?
Can the Adroid OS be Rooted?
Can one access the Win CE desktop on the head unit?
Anyone else try any of the OBD connection options yet? BT, WiFI, USB? Torque capability is probably #2 on my list of Must haves. (would even be happy with Win CE based apps like Centrafuse HobD, etc which is why I asked about the WIN CE desktop:

      Answers to your questions:
      - As far as I know the only difference between 777 and 778 is that the newer model has a DVB/T/C tuner where as the older one has an analog tuner.
      - Yes the Android OS can and has been rooted. I did it using SuperOneClick which worked fine. Other methods have also been used succesfully.
      - No one can access the WinCE as far as I have heard

  21. Great thread and thanks to everyone for the info! XD
I'm thinking about purchasing ES778, but torque is very important form me.
Anyone have get success connecting a Bluetooth USB Dongle?
I have read on a forum that android 2.3 is capable of it. They say to follow this steps:
    1.- Turn off the pad
2.- Connect the bluetooth usb dongle
    3.- Turn on the pad
4.- After reboot it sould have bluetooth
It's possible that Android does not load bluetooth drivers if it does not detect the bluetooth usb dongle during bootup.
    Could anyone try it?

    Thanks and best regards.

  22. hi, and thanks for making this site. I drive a 2005 mazda rx8 and I bought the es778a from erisin.com. I did all of my wiring right and im still getting a static type noise in my speakers when ever you touch the android pad. even if you sit there and listen you can hear the noise. the more you turn the volume up the more you can hear it. when I disconnect the pad from the head unit the noise stops. it starts to make the noise around the time you see android across the screen at startup. do you have any idea what it could be. also I connected my rearveiw camera to this player and at startup it goes to the rearveiw camera while im still in park. I have the camera connected to the cam rca plug in the back of the head unit. the camera should only come on when im in reverse. I also have my back up wire connected properly.

  24. Hey guys, I got the Erisin 777a about 60 days ago. took me 30 days to install.
30 days later the tablet will no longer boot up. It looks like for other tablets you can find firmware for the boot partition and flash over it... but I can't find anything for this Erisin :( My tablet shows the green android guy then shows the loan "android" txt and just loads over and over and over and over no matter what I do. I contacted Erisin the other day and they told me I may need to buy a new unit... not sure if they mean tablet and stereo... or just the tablet and they have not told me how much it would cost.

While the unit was working it was amazing. The unit was VERY fast and everything worked perfect including Google navigation... I'm hoping to get this patched up and running again. I will post as I get more info from Erisin.

  25. Hi Timo,

Thanks for your nice blog and detailed posts. You are a helpful guy. I went and bought one after reading your stuff.

I'm happy man. It's all good. Everything works. I just want to try the bluetooth thing for my ODB2 connector and Torque. I'll try post some stuff when I'm done. Wish me luck.

  26. I just got the wifi odb2 and connected to the pad. I also upgraded to the pro version of Torque. Its pretty cool. The downside is to unplug the module when leaving car. I did see someone put a toggle switch on the ODB2 plug.

    1. Great ! The pro version of Torque can use USB OBD adapters. Do you think it might be an option ? (i.e. to prevent the use of a toggle switch; and generally do you think it's possible to hook up something else than a 3G Key on the USB host port ? Can I use a USB hub on this one ? Thanks in advance for your precious answers

  28. Does anybody have problems with turning the pad on?
I have the 779a version, and when the pad is disconnected from the headunit and left inactive for some time, it goes dark (like in standby) and it does not turn on when pressing the on/off button. Only after several attempts, playing with the charger and the button (in a random fashon) I see the pad turning on

ps. I want to use torque as well. I have ordered a Bluetooth dongle hoping it works, otherwise I have to opt with the wifi.

    Thanks,
    Simon

  29. Hello, I jsut wanted to let you know I was on the fence about this unit, but after finding yoru blog, I bought one. I am VERY happy with it.

I installed it myself, no problems. Replaced the GPS software with Navigon, I use Winamp or CarTunes to play my mp3s which are installed in the PAD on a 32GB class 10 sd card.

I had some issues with it not shutting down, or not turning on, but then I received an update for the PAD firmware from the manufacture, and its been working great ever since.

I installed Go Launcher, slimmed it down to only 1 home screen, and dropped my apps there.

One issue I did have was the volume difference between the Radio and the PAD was VERY different, read as the PAD was MUCH LOWER volume, even with the pad volume turned all the way up. I did however fix this issue by installing Speaker Boost from the android market. After some playing around, I set it at 47% boost, and the PAD volume at 80%, and now the Radio and PAD volumes are very close! No more being blown away when I switch from MP3 or GPS to Radio.

The only real changes I would like to make are:
    1) to have FM Tuner control software on the pad, for a more attractive interface.
    2) to have the hardware MUTE button pause MP3's whem playing, or when I hit pause
on the MP3 player, for the Radio NOT to kick back on. I have to push two buttons
to pause and mute music to answer a call.

I'll keep tuned and if I see any updates Ill let you know as well!
